Winter solstice tomorrow. It’s been a bountiful year and different from the last. Some things I’ll do again, others probably not (I’m looking at you mouse melons – cute, but they were a trap for mites and not even that tasty). Still getting a few greens and parsely, especially out of the greenhouse, which is not heated but slightly milder than outside. The greens I do get seem more like a multivitamin than a vegetable.
Otherwise I’m organizing my camera roll, ordering books, resting and imagining spring and summer. Also doting on my Meyer lemon tree with three lemons growing which scares me to death. Is it okay? Will they ripen? Will it kill the tree? Will it have the flowers again that smell so beautiful in February?
As the year closes and renews, a big thank you to everyone who entrusted me with caring for their plants and outdoor spaces. Each garden is unique and it’s a wonderful challenge to return to them, observe them, and compose their elements. Next up will be pruning wisteria, figs, roses, panicle hydrangea, and ornamental grasses. I’ll see you after a restorative winter nap!
